The museum sits at a level at the base of the buildings. They got down to these “box columns” made of heavy steel, meant to last lifetimes at the level of the bedrock foundation. The workers sheared most of them to the ground, leaving a visible marker for the footprint of both towers. (Those footprints encircle the areas with collections & exhibits.) But here you can see one of the box columns as it survived.
